Korea 2001 FA Cup champions Taejon Citizen are hoping to salvage a disappointing domestic season by doing well in the US$3 million Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League when the tournament resumes next month.
한국 2001 FA컵 우승자인 대전 시티즌은 다음달 다시 재개되는 아시아 축구 연맹에서 열리는 AFC에서 좋은 성적을 거둠으로서 자국리그에서의 실망스러웠던 시즌을 만회하고자 한다.
Taejon finished bottom of the K-League last year and were knocked out of the 2002 FA Cup, losing to Suwon Bluewings 1-0 in the semi-finals to finish the season without a trophy. While finishing the year without silverware might be a minor letdown, what made it even more unbearable for Taejon was that they had only achieved a solitary league victory in 27 matches.
대전은 지난해 K-League에서는 최하위로, 2002 FA컵에서는 수원 블루윙스와의 준결승에서 1-0의 패로 트로피없이 시즌을 마쳤다. 다소 실망스러운 시즌 성적보다 대전을 더 견딜 수 없이 만들었던 것은 그들이 27경기에서 단지 한경기만을 승리했다는 사실이었다.
However, Taejon's domestic disappointment is a stark contrast to their all-conquering form in the AFC Champions League. Taejon were hardly pushed as they won all their continental matches with relative ease enroute to qualifying for the lucrative group stage. After strolling through a qualifying road that had offered few obstacles, Taejon will now face Group A hosts BEC Tero Sasana of Thailand, favourites Kashima Antlers of Japan and China's Shanghai Shenhua in the next round.
그러나 대전의 자국리그에서의 실망스러운 성적은 AFC Champions League에서의 모든 승리들과 뚜렷하게 대조되었다. 대전은 예선전에서 상대팀들에게 거의 밀리지 않았다. 거의 방해없이 예선전을 거친 후, 대전은 다음 라운드에서 Group A(주최국인 태국의 BEC Tero Sasana, 우승후보인 일본의 Kashima Antlers, 중국의 Shanghai Shenhua)와의 대결을 앞에 두고 있다.
On their way to the four-team group stage, Taejon thrashed Macau club Monte Carlo 8-1 on aggregate in the second round before moving on to defeat India's oldest club Mohun Bagan with a similar aggregate scoreline.
4팀과의 경기를 치르기까지, 대전은 2R에서 Macau의 Monte Carlo를 총 8-1로 격파하고, 인도의 전통있는 club Mohun Bagan과에는 그와 비슷한 점수로 패배를 안겼다.
As part of their assault on the AFC Champions League quarter-finals, Taejon have hired a new coach in Choi Yoon-gyum to replace outgoing Lee Tae-ho. Choi was in charge of Bucheon SK last season, steering the team to an eighth placed finish from a 10-team field, two rungs above Taejon with 14 points separating the two clubs.
AFC Champions League 준준결승에서 맹습의 일환으로, 대전은 사임한 이태호 감독의 뒤를 이어 최윤겸 감독을 새로 맞이했다. 최윤겸 감독은 지난 시즌 부천SK를 맡아 10팀 중 8위의 성적을 거두었다. 대전과는 2단계의 순위가 앞섰으며 승점은 14점 차이가 났었다.
"This will be my first match in charge [of Taejon] and I hope to bring out the best from everyone," said Choi. "The most important thing at the moment is to get a good result for the team.
"이것이 (대전에서의) 첫경기가 될 것이고 모두 최선을 발휘해주길 바랍니다. 이순간 가장 중요한 것은 팀에 좋은 결과를 안기는 것입니다." 라고 최윤겸 감독은 말했다.
"The group stage matches will be close as there is not much to separate the teams. Since the matches are played away from home, we might encounter some problems. Nevertheless, we will try our best."
"이번 라운드는 팀간 큰 차이없이 끝날 것입니다. 홈경기가 아닌 어웨이 경기기 때문에, 약간의 문제들과 맞닥뜨리겠지만 우리는 최선을 다할 것입니다."
Choi admitted ill knowledge of his opposition from Group A but did reveal that plans are currently underway to collect information on BEC Tero Sasana, Kashima Antlers and Shanghai Shenhua.

In the transfer market, Taejon have been relatively docile as compared to their domestic rivals Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, the latter having stamped their ambitions for the AFC Champions League with five recent big name signings.

Shin Jin-won, a former player who was sold to Chunam Dragons in 2001, is Taejon's only acquisition during the off season and will now make his way back to help push the side for an AFC Champions League semi-final place.

Apart from relying on Shin's experience, Taejon will once again look towards striker Kim Eun-jung and attacking midfielder Lee Kwan-woo for inspiration as the duo had played influential roles in the club's foray into the group stage.
신진원의 노련함은 별문제로 하고, 대전은 striker 김은중과 공격형 midfielder 이관우에 결승 진출을 위한 걸출한 역할을 기대하고 있다.
"We will take it one match at a time," said Choi nonchalantly. "We hope the Gods will smile on us in our quest to make an impression in the Group Stages of the AFC Champions League."
